Is each Smartbox™ engineered to suit each individual vehicle or do you use standard components?
We program our modules to suit each type of engine and fuel system. Families of the same engine can use the same module, for example VAG applications.
Can I carry out the installation myself and are there instructions?
Installation is simple, especially on Common Rail applications and typically takes just 15-20 minutes. Other applications can also be installed by the end-user with a very basic level of DIY competence. In every case, we supply comprehensive fitting instructions along all hardware required to make the job as straight forward as possible. Every module uses the manufacturers’ original plugs and connectors where possible so purchasing additional parts is not necessary.
I have seen modules which boast higher BHP than the Smartbox™, why buy this one?
Ramping up fuel pressure to deliver more power is simple. The skill is to ensure the car is totally driveable across a wider power band, ensuring cleaner, quicker acceleration, safer overtaking, fewer gear changes and an all-round better driving experience. Masses of power delivered in a narrow power band or 'spike' is useless whether it be for normal or performance road driving. Big BHP claims only serve as a marketing ploy, and usually mask deficiencies elsewhere.
If the Smartbox™ improves power and torque, how can it save fuel?
Imagine driving to work now, then the following day allowing the car to replicate the same journey using the throttle in exactly the same way, this time with the Smartbox™ fitted. The improved power and torque means that the car will make the journey in a faster time and at higher speeds, but using the same amount of fuel (same application of the throttle remember...). The fuel saving comes about when you aim to make the journey in the original time, thus using less application of the throttle and ultimately less fuel in the process.
Does it affect the running, cold start and diagnostic abilities?
The vehicle behaves exactly as a normal vehicle – except the maximum power and torque has changed.
Does my insurance change?
The power and torque increases should be reported to your insurance company but its best to consult your broker first. Only in the most seldom cases does the insurance risk increase the premium. Ensure any disclosures are made to your insurance company in writing.
Does the emission rating of my vehicle change after the power upgrade?
Absolutely not! An increase of the standard emission rating is not permitted by EU law. For this reason the Smartbox™ has been through numerous certification processes in order to ensure emissions standards are not adversely affected.
Do changes have to be made to the transmission ECU?
The higher torque produced by the Smartbox™ does not have any issues with automatic transmissions because the torque is being monitored via a CAN-Bus signal. This reduces excessive levels of torque to the drive line components.
Does the top speed and acceleration change?
Because the device is optimised to deliver best performance between 1,000 and 2,500 rpm, top speed will not be affected. You will therefore experience the availability of more acceleration at much lower engine speeds. We only orientate the Smartbox™ on values that can be reproduced – the power and torque figures from the engine.
How long does it take to fit and can I wait?
If self fitting, installation takes approximately 10-15 minutes. A skilled mechanic with experience of the Smartbox™ will be able to fit it in considerably less time.
I have a lease car, before giving the vehicle back I would like to remove the power module. Can I do this?
Yes, removal is as simple as installation. If your replacement vehicle is different, you can contact us to see how your Smartbox can be upgraded for your new vehicle.
Is it advisable to install an optimisation or power upgrade onto a new vehicle?
Whilst running in a vehicle to manufacturers recommended guidelines, it is not advisable to fit a tuning module of any type. During this phase, the piston rings would not have bedded in properly into the cylinder surface and the added combustion pressure might lead to piston slap.
Is it easy to reverse vehicle back to standard?
Yes, our module is easily removed and does not leave an electronic ‘footprint’
Is it possible to try a power or optimisation module?
We are totally confident that you will be impressed by the results of the Smartbox™. If for any reason this is not the case, we will offer a full refund if it returned in original condition within 14 days.
Is the Smartbox™ harmful to the engine?
No. Our tuning parameters use the tolerances in the engine left by the engine designers without having a harmful effect on the life expectancy of the engine and other power train components. All relevant parameters are carefully monitored when testing on our rolling roads. Thermal loads are equivalent to the manufacturers’ standard values.
Is the module visible during routine Servicing at the Dealers?
Naturally an expert can identify the module when checking under the bonnet. However when downloading data and fault codes stored in the ECU, the presence of the module cannot be identified. This is also the case once it has been removed, as it leaves no trace of its installation.
What do I have to look out for after a fitting my Smartbox™?
No more then what you would do normally. All service intervals as recommended by the manufacturer have to be observed, along with your normal checks such as oil and water. Turbo engines should be warmed up before using full power. Likewise, a cooling down perios should be observed after a long motorway drive. If you follow these simple rules then you will be able to experience trouble free enjoyment of your car for a long time.
What guarantees do we give?
We guarantee all damage which has been caused through a faulty module. You receive an additional warranty cover for 24 month. The guarantee ends with the end of the warranty period or if the mileage exceeds 60.000 miles.
Why don’t the manufacturers do it?
Vehicle manufacturers have some of the best engineers however they have other strict targets to meet, for example vehicle classifications, tax bands, fuel quality, mechanical tolerances and differing temperatures. All of these points will restrict the engineer’s ability to optimise the engine's performance.
Can I continue to operate my vehicle with bio fuel?
As long as the engine is approved by the manufacturer for bio diesel use then any tuning measures will not cause any problem either. But because bio diesel hasn’t got the same viscosity as normal diesel, the final result is not as good as with normal diesel.
Will my Turbo diesel pass the emission test?
Always. The Smartbox™ approach does not cause a deterioration of emission values. In many cases, Common rail vehicles will register improved emission readings.
